Since the mid nineteen-eighties Joe Lima has been exhibiting his work in galleries across Canada, including several sculpture exhibitions. He participated in both Series Kompakt at La Galerie d'Art Lavalin in Montreal and Anarchitecture: The Inaccessible Dwelling at both the Marsil Museum, St. Lambert and Sherbrooke University in Sherbrooke, Quebec. For the last several years Lima has been working in the medium of fresco painting. Desiring the portability of painting while retaining the scale and three-dimensionality of sculpture, he began to create "walls within a frame." These portable frescos were exhibited in 1996 at Didactart in the 4710 St-Ambroise: Jean-Marie Delavalle, John Fox, Joe Lima, Louis Masson, Jean McEwen exhibition and at the Centre D'Art Belgo in 1999 with Espace 414 - Recent Paintings. Joe Lima was born in Sao Miguel in the Portuguese Azores in 1963. He studied visual arts at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario and at Concordia University in Montreal, where he currently lives. In 2000 after a period of creative development on location in the Azores he exhibited his frescos at the Galeria de Arte da Camara Municipal, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal. In the last few years Lima has participated in the Sem Saudade collective aimed to celebrate and create awareness of the contribution of Portuguese immigrant culture to Canada. In 2002 he participated in Sem Saudade - Contemporary Art by Canadians of Portuguese Heritage at Cambridge Galleries and in 2003 at Gallery 1313, Toronto Ontario which marked the fiftieth anniversary of the first official wave of Portuguese immigration. Recent exhibitions at Cambridge, Ontario and Rodman Hall Arts Centre in St. Catharine's, Ontario display images that are derived from re-visitations to spaces linked to a personal past that is gone. The reference for this work comes from abandoned fields and interiors from Portugal and Canada. |
